Matt Palmer
Born to ride…..Matt received his first pony at age 1….and his first ribbon on that pony at 22 months of age…Lead line to be sure but already developing that “sense of balance”!
Lead line took Matt on to the Devon Horse Show, a very prestigious venue in Devon PA where, on a very well trained, Dupont bred registered Welsh pony, Ebel Lenore, he garnered yet another ribbon!
By age 4 he had not only graduated from lead line but also moved past ponies and on to Quarter Horses and at the All American Quarter Horse Congress rode a Barroom Johnny son, Barroom Beau, born and raised on the Palmer farm. Now, Congress was in his blood. For the next 4 years, he showed at the Congress in walk-trot pleasure classes. At age 8 he came out of a pleasure class and declared that he was now moving up to reiners! Decision made!
At age 9, on Totally Greyhound, he won the Carolina Classic in the 13 and under…his first time in the pen at a NRHA Show! WOW! What excitement! At that show, Matt and his parents (and support team) first saw Crome Plated Berry. Well, after the Palmers saw Matt on Berry, Berry made the trip home to Pennsylvania from North Carolinas and Matt and Berry became the pair to watch. By the time he was 12, the pair won the Congress and the Derby in OKC and Matt and Berry were World Champion 13 and under. What a year! Greyhounds Last Slide took Matt to his first Bronze trophy at age 14 in Intermediate Non-Pro. The Trophy collection had begun! As Matt made an impression with a horse, the sale of that horse to customers became inevitable. And so, Matt learned that one of his jobs in life would be to “make” a horse.
The following years found Matt on many of the Palmer horses and then Hollywood Lolita came to the Palmers. The next year found both Father and Son, finishing in the Top 10, on the same horse…Hollywood Lolita! Matt and Lolita became the team to watch. Not only trophies but also championship saddles and numerous other titles and rewards culminated in a NRHA World Championship for the team. Matt was still only 16 years old!
Horses, to this point in his life had pushed his other sports interests to the background and Matt decided that, while he still had his High School athletic opportunities available to him, he should let the horses take a back burner for a while. Football, basketball and baseball played a primary role in his life. MVP on the basketball team and being named to the State baseball All Star team were among the many ways in which Matt’s all-around athletic abilities were recognized. Baseball even gave him the honor of a scholarship to college where, in his freshman year, he was named to the All Star Team. An injury sidelined him and then took baseball out of his college life. Fortunately injuries heal and, even today, Matt is still playing in a men’s league and thoroughly enjoying it. His competitive nature surfaces through his interest in sports as well as his lifetime passion for horses and the show ring.
Matt’s knowledge of sports and fitness play a large role in his training program. A daily training program for his own body fitness conditions the trainer to gain maximum use of body language in communicating with the horse.
As life brought Matt to the point of having to determine what direction he wanted to take, a profession in horses was one of the choices offered. Though several other opportunities presented themselves, Matt realized that life as a trainer of reining horses would let him satisfy his sense of competition as well as allow him the satisfaction of bringing a young horse along to the level of being “special”. It is Matt’s joy to not only take a young horse to the place where they are futurity candidates but also to bring them along in such a way that they are good Derby prospects and can go on to long careers in the reining world. Matt has earnings of $124,371.32.
